IN MEMORIAM - KIRBY LUKE

Welcome to La Grange, a Texas Main Street Town

GHOST TOWNS IN FAYETTE COUNTY AND AROUND LA GRANGE
What is a ghost town?
A ghost town is essentially a town or city or other community that was at one time self sufficient with some trade, commerce, banking, communication and a host of other entities such as churches, stores, etc.  It is a term used in the United States and is not limited to the South Western portion of the country.  The demise of such communities could have been for a number of reasons such as drought, by pass by railroads, population movements, etc.  A ghost town is not necessary totally devoid of any people or buildings but they have little if any population and buildings are either unused or serve to attract tourists.
It is estimated that Texas has about 800 ghost towns.
